GET TO KNOW MAMMAL BOOTS
YOU CAN FIND US NOT FAR FROM THE SEA IN BEAUTIFUL DEVON
About Us
Hi, we’re Mammal!
We’re a small team based in a beautiful part of Devon, and we make men's and women's anti-slip winter boots.
We dreamed up Mammal Boots here in the UK, and have been making walking in winter safer for our customers for over 10 years. Mammal Boots are designed in Italy, and feature the patented OC System for extra grip when you need it most. When you’re walking over snow and ice, simply unclip the ice grips in the sole, reclip and you’re good to go.
We love what we do – but our first love is the outdoors! We’re an active team who aim to get outside as much as possible, and we design the winter boots we want for our own lifestyle; boots that look great for the everyday, but also hold up in bad weather, or tricky terrain.
Finding reliable anti-slip boots in the UK can make a huge difference during winter. Frost, rain and sudden temperature drops often create slippery pavements that increase the risk of slipping while walking.
Whether you’re commuting, walking the dog or heading to the shops, the right winter footwear can improve stability and confidence when conditions become icy.
This guide explains everything you need to know about choosing the best anti-slip winter boots in the UK.
Why Winter Pavements Become Slippery
The UK’s winter climate creates a unique combination of hazards for pedestrians.
Unlike countries with consistent snow cover, the UK often experiences:
- Wet surfaces that freeze overnight
- Thin layers of black ice
- Frost on untreated pavements
- Rapid temperature changes
These conditions reduce the friction between footwear and the ground, increasing the likelihood of slipping. Choosing winter boots designed specifically for icy conditions can help improve traction and walking confidence.
What Makes a Boot Truly Anti-Slip?
Many winter boots are marketed as “anti-slip,” but true traction depends on several design features.
1. Sole Material
Winter boots should use flexible rubber compounds that remain effective in cold temperatures. Some materials become rigid in freezing conditions, reducing their ability to grip the ground.
2. Tread Pattern
Deep tread patterns help channel water away from the sole and increase surface contact. This improves grip on wet pavements and uneven ground. However, tread alone may not always provide enough traction on smooth ice.
3. Mechanical Ice Grip Technology
Some winter boots include built-in ice traction systems such as OCSystem.
These systems use retractable stainless-steel studs to increase grip on icy surfaces by providing mechanical traction. Unlike rubber soles that rely on friction alone, metal studs can penetrate thin layers of ice to improve stability.
Rubber Grip vs Ice Grip Systems
Understanding the difference between these two traction approaches can help you choose the right winter boots.
Rubber-Only Winter Boots
Pros:
- Comfortable for everyday wear
- Good traction on wet surfaces
- Suitable for mild winter conditions
Limitations:
- May slide on smooth ice
- Performance depends entirely on friction
Boots with Ice Grip Systems
Pros:
- Additional traction on frozen surfaces
- Improved grip on icy pavements
- Greater walking confidence in winter
OCSystem ice grips to retract when walking on dry pavement, making them practical for daily use.
Key Features to Look for in Winter Boots
When shopping for winter boots in the UK, look for the following features.
Warm Insulation
Thermal linings help maintain warmth during cold weather, particularly when walking outdoors for extended periods.
Water Resistance
Water-resistant or waterproof membranes help prevent moisture from entering the boot while still allowing breathability. This helps keep feet dry in rain, snow and slush.
Stable Sole Construction
A wide and supportive sole can improve balance and walking stability. This is particularly important when navigating uneven or slippery ground.
Easy Fastening
Zips or lace-up closures help create a secure fit and make boots easier to put on and remove.
Anti-Slip Boots for Everyday Winter Activities
The best winter boots should support a variety of daily activities.
Common uses include:
- Walking the dog
- Commuting to work
- Running errands
- Outdoor winter walks
- Travelling in cold climates
Choosing a boot that balances traction, warmth and comfort ensures it can be worn throughout the winter season.
Anti-Slip Boots for Adults Over 50
Maintaining stability becomes increasingly important with age. Adults over 50 often prioritise footwear that provides:
- Reliable grip
- Good ankle support
- Comfortable cushioning
- Confidence when walking outdoors
Winter boots with enhanced traction systems can help support these needs.
Style Meets Practicality
Modern winter boots are designed to combine function and style. Many designs include:
- Faux-fur or fleece trim
- Leather or suede finishes
- Sleek winter silhouettes
This means you don’t need to sacrifice style to gain practical winter performance.
Choosing the Right Winter Boot Height
Ankle Boots
- Lightweight and versatile
- Ideal for everyday wear
Mid-Calf Boots
- Extra warmth and coverage
- Suitable for colder weather
Tall Boots
- Maximum protection against snow and cold
Choosing the right height depends on your typical winter activities.
Caring for Winter Boots
Proper care helps extend the life of your winter footwear.
Tips include:
- Cleaning off salt and dirt after use
- Allowing boots to dry naturally
- Storing them in a cool, dry place
This helps maintain both appearance and performance.
